The design and utilization of animal models for testing new therapeutic drugs, medical devices, or combination products have become key in obtaining proof of concept, confirming mechanism of action, and attaining regulatory approval for the final developed product. This session will explore preclinical testing practices associated with development of both medical devices and new drugs/biologicals. The speaker will compare safety and efficacy endpoints in preclinical testing and will discuss the ability for this information to adequately translate to the clinic. Speaker: Mark Smith PhD, Chief Scientific Officer, APS In his role as CSO at APS, a large preclinical testing facility focused on medical devices and combination products, Mark has had extensive experience in design and management of preclinical testing for a wide range of medical devices. His previous experience at Pfizer as a Fellow in the Global Drug Discovery program also gives him a unique ability to compare and contrast processes in the med device and Pharma sectors. Mark received his PhD from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was a postdoctoral fellow and Staff researcher at the NIH before entering the pharmaceutical industry.
